One day last week I put mascara on my dog.
She’s a shih tzu and has these gloriously long eyelashes that are super swoopy and girly. But like the rest of her, they’re white, so you can’t really see them unless you’re looking for them. Her eyes and boopy little nose are a deep, inky black, so I’ve always thought it a bit unfair that she’s got these kickass eyelashes that never get any attention.
Hence… the mascara.
Now, two things happened after I got a couple of coats on her. One… she did not appreciate me jacking around with her eyes and refused to sit still, so it didn’t go on nearly as well as I’d envisioned.
And two… it never once crossed my mind—until the next morning, while I was using the same mascara on myself—that I may have just spread a generous amount of doggie eye goo all over my own lashes. So if one of my eyes suddenly swells shut, please remind me that I did this to myself.
I’ve been in a weird funk lately and getting little hits of dopamine from things like the dog-lashes help pull me out of it for a little bit.

I have ADHD and when life gets too routine, I start shutting down. Weird, I know, but adding a little chaos by spicing things up in little ways, really helps me get through the boring stuff and keeps me moving.
Case in point: I recently ordered some tiny hand pointers from Amazon and handed them out to my team. We are obsessed with them and call them our “judgy pointers.” I accidentally used one during an online meeting last week and one of my colleagues laughed so hard she had to put her head down on her desk. Mission accomplished. That sent me through the rest of the day on a high note.
One of these days I will get around to finishing up the paint-by-numbers kit, organizing my photos, and re-learning the piano. – all “hobbies” I’ve started and lost interest in as soon as the dopamine wore off.
But for now, I’m leaning into the little things – the mascara-on-the-dog things. Because lately, they’re doing some pretty important work.
